The larger the share of volatile renewables the more difficult to control stress situations for the power grid. Explore practices of integration of energy storage in the windiest federal state of Germany. While renewable energy here is abundant, it needs be integrated according to the demand and grid. We will look at different technologies (thermal storage in bricks and water and chemical storage) and applications (production, district heating, energy utilities).
Visits
Covestro - Construction Site of a 100 MW Heat Battery
We will visit the building site of a 100 MW heat battery for the company Covestro. Commissioning is planned for end of the year. Covestro is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality polymer materials and their components. The heat battery will cover part of the production needs. The technology for the battery comes from the American green-tech start-up Rondo. Covestro is its first customer in Germany, and the project is backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and the European Investment Bank.

WIMeG Wärmeinfrastruktur - Geothermal Storage for District Heating
This geothermal storage (PTES – Pit Thermal Energy Storage) received an award by the German energy agency and is based on a Danish model. As the first basin for seasonal heat storage in Germany, it was completed in 2023.
The storage is filled with water (43,000 m³) that is heated up to 85°C holding up to 1,500 MWh of heat. Currently, it enables district heating for 55 buildings.
