Skeleton Technologies has officially opened its so-called SuperFactory in Markranstädt near Leipzig that will produce the Estonian company's next-generation supercapacitors and systems. "This is a proud day for Estonia, for Germany, and for Europe", Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said in his speech at the opening event on 28 November 2025 that he attended together with Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer.
Highlighting the record-breaking investment of 220 million euros by Estonia into the German economy, Michal mentioned that by opening this factory a noteworthy shift has happened: “Something important is changing. For a long time, Germany invested in Estonia. Now Estonia is investing in Germany. This is a true two-way street - a sign of trust and shared ambition. Germany’s industrial strength meets Estonian digital speed.”
Skeleton Technologies has been founded in Estonia in 2009 and, according to its own account, is a leading European provider of high-performance and fast-charging energy storage systems for applications in AI data centers, grid stabilization, mobility and defense. Opening the Leipzig supercapacitor facility follows the recent opening of the company’s SuperBattery facility in Varkaus in Finland and marks the start of series production of ultracapacitors. The new plant will create 420 jobs in Saxony and is designed for an annual output of up to 12 million cells.
Skeleton CEO Taavi Madiberk said the plant will produce the company's next-generation supercapacitors and systems, including its GrapheneGPU solution. "Our product helps AI data centers reduce peak loads and power use by up to 44 percent," he told the audience, adding that the supercapacitors rely on a fully European supply chain and do not contain lithium, cobalt, manganese, or other critical raw materials, but are based on the company's patented 'curved graphene, material.
The new facility is already delivering to Siemens, General Electric, and Hitachi Energy for European electrical grids, and to major US hyperscalers for AI infrastructure. "With its supercapacitors, Skeleton is bringing a technology to Saxony with enormous potential", Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer said, adding that Estonia's largest ever foreign investment ever sends a strong signal for Saxony as a high-tech location and for the surrounding rural areas. The new plant is a key component of the structural transformation in the Central German coal mining region and acts as magnet to, attract other innovative companies.
